The Real Monthly Cost of an Electric Car in Curitiba

Energy, maintenance, insurance, IPVA and public charging. We calculated item by item the real monthly cost of keeping an electric car in Curitiba and compared it with a combustion equivalent. The numbers surprise.

Methodology: how we calculated it

For this analysis, we used as a reference a BYD Dolphin (electric, ~R$ 150,000) and a Toyota Corolla Cross (combustion, a similar price range). Both are popular cars in Curitiba, with an urban use profile and monthly mileage of 1,200 km — the Brazilian average according to ANFAVEA.

The energy figures are based on Copel's residential tariff (green flag) and on the average prices of public charging stations in the Curitiba region in April 2026. Gasoline: an average of R$ 6.20/liter in the metropolitan region.

1. Energy / Fuel

This is the item where the difference is most glaring.

Electric car (BYD Dolphin)

  • Average consumption: 6.5 km/kWh (urban use, Curitiba)
  • 1,200 km ÷ 6.5 = 184.6 kWh/month
  • Charging at home (Copel, R$ 0.75/kWh with taxes): R$ 138.50/month
  • Charging 100% at a fast charging station (R$ 1.80/kWh): R$ 332/month
  • Realistic mix (70% home + 30% charging station): R$ 196/month

Combustion car (Corolla Cross)

  • Average consumption: 10 km/liter (urban use, Curitiba)
  • 1,200 km ÷ 10 = 120 liters/month
  • Gasoline at R$ 6.20/liter: R$ 744/month

Savings on fuel/energy

The electric car costs between R$ 138 and R$ 332 per month on energy, depending on where you charge. The combustion equivalent costs R$ 744/month. Minimum savings: R$ 412/month. Maximum savings: R$ 606/month.

2. Maintenance

Electric cars have drastically fewer moving parts. With no combustion engine, there are no oil changes, fuel filters, spark plugs, belts or clutch. Regenerative braking reduces pad wear by up to 70%.

Item Electric (monthly) Combustion (monthly)
Periodic service R$ 50-80 R$ 150-250
Tires (amortized) R$ 60-80 R$ 50-70
Brakes (amortized) R$ 10-15 R$ 30-50
Fluids and filters R$ 10-15 R$ 40-60
Monthly total R$ 130-190 R$ 270-430

A note on tires: electric cars are heavier and have more torque, which can accelerate tire wear. EV-specific tires (like the Michelin e-Primacy) cost a bit more, but they last proportionally longer.

3. Insurance

Electric car insurance is still, on average, 15% to 25% more expensive than the combustion equivalent. This is due to the higher cost of parts (especially the battery) and the lower availability of specialized workshops.

  • BYD Dolphin in Curitiba: R$ 350-500/month (male profile, 35 years old, garage)
  • Corolla Cross in Curitiba: R$ 280-400/month (same profile)

The trend is for values to fall as the electric fleet grows and insurers accumulate actuarial data. Some insurers already offer specific discounts for EVs.

4. IPVA

Paraná offers an IPVA exemption for electric vehicles, which is a significant advantage. For a car worth R$ 150,000, the IPVA would be roughly R$ 375/month (3% a year). This exemption offsets a good part of the higher insurance cost.

"The IPVA exemption in Paraná for electrics saves more than R$ 4,500 a year. It's a real incentive that makes a difference in the math."

5. Summary: total monthly cost compared

Item Electric Combustion
Energy / Fuel R$ 196 R$ 744
Maintenance R$ 160 R$ 350
Insurance R$ 425 R$ 340
IPVA R$ 0 R$ 375
Monthly total R$ 781 R$ 1,809

Monthly savings with an electric car in Curitiba

R$ 1,028/month — more than R$ 12,000 a year. Over 5 years, the savings surpass R$ 60,000, offsetting a significant part of the difference in purchase price between the models.

Where charging impacts the cost

The "energy" item is the most variable in the electric car's math. Charging at home is significantly cheaper than at public charging stations. But even those who rely 100% on public charging still save compared with gasoline.

The key is to choose smart charging stations that optimize your time. At Elektro Charge in Pinhais (Av. Maringá, 24h), the 60 kW DC charger with a CCS2 connector charges from 20% to 80% in 25-40 minutes. Combine it with a meal or a break and the time invested is zero.

Tips to cut the cost even further

  1. Charge during the time-of-use tariff — After 10 p.m., Copel's tariff drops. Schedule the car's charging for that time (tarifa branca).
  2. Monitor consumption — The car's apps show consumption per km. Adjust your driving style to maximize efficiency.
  3. Use regenerative braking — Activating the more aggressive regeneration mode reduces consumption by up to 15% in urban traffic.
  4. Keep tires inflated — Tires with low pressure increase energy consumption by up to 10%.
  5. Plan your charges — Keeping the battery between 20% and 80% day to day preserves its life and optimizes charging speed.

Conclusion: the electric is already cheaper to keep

The numbers don't lie: even with more expensive insurance, the total monthly cost of an electric car in Curitiba is less than half that of the combustion equivalent. The IPVA exemption in Paraná, the reduced maintenance and the brutal savings on energy make the electric the financially smart choice.

And when you choose charging stations that offer an experience — like dining, comfort and convenience — the cost of charging time becomes zero. Because you're not waiting. You're living.

Smart charging, reduced cost

DC fast charging 60 kW, 24 hours, Pinhais. Combine it with dining and zero out the wait.
