Electric Car Insurance: Price, Coverage and What Changes

Electric car insurance is usually more expensive than that of an equivalent combustion model. But why? How much more? And is it worth it? We analyze real prices, specific coverage and tips to find the best option in Paraná.

Why EV insurance costs more

Insurance for an electric car is, on average, 15% to 30% more expensive than for a combustion vehicle of similar value. The main reasons are:

  • Vehicle value: electric cars tend to be more expensive than combustion equivalents, and the insurance premium is proportional to the insured value.
  • Battery cost: the battery represents 30-40% of the vehicle's value. If damaged, repair or replacement is extremely expensive.
  • Imported parts: most EVs sold in Brazil are imported. Replacement parts have higher costs and longer delivery times.
  • Specialized labor: few mechanics and body shops are qualified to work on high-voltage vehicles, which raises repair costs.
  • Limited history: insurers still have little claims data on EVs in Brazil, which leads them to price with a safety margin.

Insurance prices for the best-selling EVs in Paraná

Estimated values for a standard profile (30-50 years old, enclosed garage, Curitiba/Pinhais, no claims) in April 2026:

Model FIPE value Annual insurance % of value
BYD Dolphin Mini R$ 115,000 R$ 3,200-4,500 2.8-3.9%
BYD Dolphin R$ 150,000 R$ 4,500-6,500 3.0-4.3%
GWM Ora 03 R$ 160,000 R$ 5,000-7,000 3.1-4.4%
Volvo EX30 R$ 230,000 R$ 7,500-10,000 3.3-4.3%
BYD Seal R$ 270,000 R$ 8,500-12,000 3.1-4.4%
BMW iX1 R$ 350,000 R$ 11,000-15,000 3.1-4.3%

For comparison, a combustion car worth R$ 150,000 would have insurance in the R$ 3,500-5,000 range (2.3-3.3% of value). The absolute difference is R$ 1,000-1,500/year — significant, but paid off with 2-3 months of fuel savings.

EV-specific coverage

When taking out insurance for an EV, check whether the policy includes:

Essential coverage for EVs

  • Traction battery: coverage for damage to the high-voltage battery, including impact, flooding and fire. This is the most important coverage — the battery can cost R$ 40,000-80,000 to replace.
  • High-voltage electrical system: inverters, electric motors and high-voltage cables.
  • Wallbox / home charger: some insurers include coverage for the home charger.
  • 24h assistance with specialized towing: EVs require a flatbed tow truck (they can't be towed by the wheels). Confirm it's included.
  • Electric or hybrid courtesy car: not all insurers offer it, but it's a differentiator.

Never take out electric car insurance without confirming battery coverage. It's like insuring a combustion car without covering the engine — the biggest risk is left out.

Factors that influence the price

Like any auto insurance, the value depends on several factors:

  1. Driver profile: age, sex, marital status, time with a license. Drivers aged 30-60 pay less.
  2. Overnight postal code: Curitiba and Pinhais have lower theft rates than São Paulo, which helps. Neighborhoods like Ecoville and Batel have different rates from areas with higher claims.
  3. Garage: a vehicle in an enclosed garage can reduce the premium by 10-15%.
  4. Vehicle use: personal use is cheaper than commercial (ride-hailing apps, for example).
  5. No-claims bonus: with no claims in recent years, the discount can reach 35%.
  6. Deductible: higher deductibles reduce the premium. For EVs, deductibles of R$ 5,000-10,000 are common.

Insurers with the best conditions for EVs

In 2026, the insurers that stand out in the electric vehicle segment in Brazil are:

  • Porto Seguro: a specific product for EVs with battery and wallbox coverage. The largest database and partner shops.
  • Allianz: comprehensive coverage and a network of certified high-voltage shops.
  • Tokio Marine: good rates for popular models like the BYD Dolphin.
  • HDI: a competitive option with specialized 24h assistance.
  • Bradesco Seguros: integration with financing and good conditions for fleets.

Tips to save on insurance

  • Get quotes from at least 5 insurers: the difference between the most and least expensive can be 40%. Use brokers who quote across multiple insurers.
  • Consider a higher deductible: if you drive little or carefully, a deductible of R$ 8,000 (vs. R$ 4,000) can save R$ 800-1,200/year on the premium.
  • Install a tracker: devices like Ituran or Sem Parar Rastreamento can generate 10-20% discounts.
  • Keep your bonus: avoid claiming for small damage. The accumulated bonus of 5+ years generates discounts of up to 35%.
  • Always garage it: showing that the vehicle is parked overnight in an enclosed garage is one of the highest-impact factors on price.
  • Pay in full: some insurers give a 5-10% discount for a single payment.

Insurance in the total cost of ownership

The EV's more expensive insurance is offset by savings on fuel and maintenance. Here's the annual balance for a BYD Dolphin vs. an equivalent flex sedan (both ~R$ 150,000):

Annual cost BYD Dolphin (EV) Flex sedan
Insurance R$ 5,500 R$ 4,200
Fuel/energy R$ 1,700 R$ 6,400
Maintenance R$ 800 R$ 3,200
IPVA (PR) R$ 5,250 R$ 5,250
Total R$ 13,250 R$ 19,050

Even with insurance R$ 1,300 more expensive, the EV saves R$ 5,800/year overall. The more expensive insurance is only a fraction of the overall savings.

Trend: increasingly affordable insurance

As the EV fleet grows, insurers accumulate data and reduce conservative pricing. The trend for 2027-2028 is convergence: EV insurance should get closer to combustion values, especially for models with domestic parts and a consolidated shop network.

The entry of manufacturers like BYD with their own shops and parts in Brazil is a decisive factor in this reduction.

Take full care of your EV

Beyond insurance, charge with quality. Elektro Charge: 60 kW DC, CCS2, 24h in Pinhais.
